IMPORT of ORCHIDS - PHYTOSANITARY REQUIREMENTS
Summary of letter from DEFRA Plant Health and Seeds Inspector
Dick,
The requirements for importing orchids from non-EC countries are:
(a) The import must be accompanied by a phytosanitary certificate which covers it.
(b) All relevant Declarations must be made on the phytosanitary certificate.
The previous letter was trying to assist in that it was giving full details of required inspections and wording of the Declarations. (These include the need to inspect the plants 3 times in 9 weeks prior to export if the area is not free from Bemisia tabaci).
However, as all these details should be known to the plant health officer in the sending country who issues the certificate - and as the sending country may apply its own requirements &/or interpret those we in the UK give in their own specific way - I suggest that you advise your exhibitors to contact their own plant health service as soon as they can rather than specifying requirements (other than (a) and (b) above).
In a nutshell, what I am saying is that it doesn't matter one little bit what we say - it's what the officers in the sending country require that will decide whether or not they issue the necessary phyto.
Thanks,
Graham
